CE #18 Business Opportunities for Independent Ownership (.10 CEU)
Thursday, July 27, 8:00-9:00am
Career opportunities as an independent pharmacy owner have been neglected to a great degree in recent years. Young pharmacists and pharmacy students are often not aware of the job satisfaction enjoyed and the income potential that can be achieved as an independent pharmacy owner. The stabilization of the independent pharmacy community at some 20,000 stores nationwide, coupled with the aging demographic of current independent owners, has created significant opportunities for young pharmacists to own their own businesses and be successful community practitioners and business owners. During two hours of formal presentation, which includes 15 minutes of Q-and-A, this presentation explores the opportunities that exist in this arena and the challenges that arise in becoming an independent pharmacy owner.

The changing world of community pharmacy requires that independent pharmacists review all advertising and marketing strategies they currently employ. The introduction of Medicare Part D will create a great opportunity to capture additional business from the senior citizen customer segment, particularly from those who have been using mail order or Canadian pharmacies to access maintenance drugs. Coupling this with the continuing need to provide a clear differentiation between corporate/chain pharmacies and independents, advertising and marketing strategies need to be more personalized and customized than ever before to help consumers and patients understand the value in dealing with an independent pharmacy.
